The Gardens
Unlike allotment-style community gardens, participants work together and share the abundance. This past season we donated 688 pounds of produce to Delaware Opportunities for their Senior Dining Program and Food Pantry. 15 volunteers worked from June to October under the brave direction of Jenine Osbon to make this happen. Amazing job!
The upper vegetable garden features 24 4’ x 36’ raised beds, and 4 smaller beds for herbs and ornamentals. It has a greenhouse that is used seasonally to propagate over 90% plants for the gardens. Varieties are selected based on popularity, disease resistance, and suitability to our climate. We emphasize sustainable growing practices.
All-America Selections is an independent non-profit organization that tests new, never-before-sold varieties for the home gardener. After a full season of anonymous trialing by horticulture professionals, only the top garden performers are given the AAS Winner award designation for their superior performance. In 2022, Birdsong Farm Community Garden joined the network of nearly 200 dedicated AAS display gardens.
